AUSIndustry Project
Technology Roadmap for Implementing
Interoperability of Geospatial Data Delivery for Australian
Minerals Industry
Based on the interest generated by the SEEGrid workshop held
last August 2003, we successfully approached AusIndustry,
through the support of Minerals
Council of Australia, to gather a consortium to think
about implementing interoperability of geospatial data for
the geosciences.
Geospatial Data describes geographically located information
collected by a variety of means such as remote sensing, ground
based and subsurface sampling. In the minerals industry this
information is used to explore for new ore deposits or to
manage sustainable extraction and rehabilitation of mined
land. The information is managed by various government agencies
as well as universities and private industry, which requires
it to be readily accessible and transferable, or “interoperable”
for a variety of needs and applications.
The project brings together Australian expertise in the CSIRO,
Geoscience
Australia and Social
Change Online (an SME), through engagement with the CRC
for Predictive
Mineral Discovery and the Minerals
Council of Australia. The objective is to implement the
first steps in enabling interoperability of geospatial data
relevant to mineral exploration and the environment, using
standards-based, non-proprietary protocols for internet access.
Interoperability will be achieved by using the data modelling
expertise, software tools, data assets and current research
from the participating organisations.

The program is offered through AusIndustry
and adopts the take-up of technologies and best practice processes
to enhance the competitiveness of Australian companies. This
can include grants for international specialist visits to
Australia, technology access workshops, and demonstration
and awareness projects. Private sector companies, industry
groups, universities, scientific agencies and training institutions
are all eligible for funding.
AusIndustry delivers about 25 products worth nearly $2
billion to some 9000 customers every year around Australia.
